June the 30, 1863
Dear wife
I take my pen in hand to rite you a few lines. I am tolerable well at this time I hope these few lines may find you all well. I hav had the worst mouth and throat you ever saw my throat has bin sweled and that sore that I hardly cound swallow anything for three weeks but it is giting some beter. I hav almost got our of hart in riting any more for I hav rote you four or five letters and hav not received any from you since I left home.
I have about sixty horses here of our regiment tath is not fit for servis we got five or six thousand prisners at Winchester they hav bin taking them up the road to Stanton evry since on there way to richmon some of them said if they got home that they would never come out to fight any more in this war. the last that I heard of the regiment they was in pennsylvania one of our company was kiled at berryville franklin M. alderson Colonel grayham and lieutenant blankenship was wounded. we hav never drawed any money if you need any money to buy Cotton or any thing else tell John Kelly to let you hav some money if he has got it to spar I would be verry glad to see you and sweet little Mary Jane but it is a long road from here to russell I want you to rite as soon as you git this direct your letter to Mount Jackson Shanandoah. Co, Va
