Dear brother
I take my pen in hand to rite you a few lines. I am well this morning and I hope these few lines may find you all well. I hav nothing of importance to rite I recived your letter the other day and was glad to hear from you all. We left Culpeper on the 25 of august and marched by the way of Stanton and I am now near mcdowel in 10 miles of monteray wv I hav bin here 4 days there is fine grass here I don't now how long we will stay here the wagons hav all gon back to Stanton after provisons when they get back I expect we will leav here our horses is doing well her my mar has stood the trip fine I hav bin offerd a thousand trades for her the yankees made a rade in here a few days before we come here they got a good many horses and fel back a cross Cheat mountain ---- of our boys that runaway has bin taken up a brought back and some has got home. Jerry Puckett runaway from Culpeper I hav not heard whether he got home or not. Hezekiah Boothe runaway he got in one mile of home and was taken up they let
him go home and stay one hour and brought him back. you said that Lieut. fickle would not pay you Capt. Stevenson, Reynolds and fields all said that Clap paid fickle sixty five dollars and fickel was to pay you. liet. fields said he had sent money home and he would rite to James Cambell to pay you the fifteen dollars. the weather is verry cold here there has bin frost evry night since we hav bin her and that is not verry plesant lying in the open field for I hav not lay in a tent since I left the salt works I hope to hear from you all again I must close.
