Greenbrier. Co. Va November the 25, 1863

Dear brother

I take this opportunity to rite you a few lines I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you all well. I recevd your letter that you sent by leut. reynolds I would hav rote sooner but I have not had the chance for the yankees hav bin pestering us a good eal latly I suppose that you hav heard about the fight that we had our regtiment was not in the fight the yankees was two strong for our men they had to fallback they kild about 30 of our men we had to retreat in the night the yankees followed us close we blocaded the road as we went they fired on us whele we was cuting timber in the road but did not hurt any of us. we stopped mear union in monroe Co. and took a stand to fight them they come in 5 miles of us and found taht we was preparing for a fight they turned back and we followed them two days and nights but could not over take them I was over the battle ground 8 days after the fight and saw two men that had just bin found one of them had bin shot through the head and the other one had his right arm and sholder shot of by a canon ball the battle was fought on a brushey mountain the timber was cut to peses with the balls I saw where canon balls had cut tree tops of and past through larg trees. we are now near lewisburg the news in in Camp that our regiment is ordered to tazwell. Co. and will start tare in a few days. I think if we go tare I will git to come home gefore long I would be so glad to see you all once more I hav got your note that you sent by Reynolds fickle says he will pay it as soon as he can draw some money.
I got a letter for Peter the other day and one from Matilda and was verry glad to hear from you all we are fairing tilerble well at this time but while the yankees was in here we was for 8 days that we had nothing but beef to eat. I would rite more to you all but I hav not the chance I must close but remain yours truly.
