"It is a miracle that any of us escape being killed in such battles as we have been in the last month or two." Letter of Benjamin F. Vermillion Benjamin F. Vermillion was the son of Jessee Vermillion and Obedience Elliott. He was born on 5/23/1838 in Russell County; married on 12/10/1857 to Mary Catherine Reynolds. He served in both the 37th Virginia Infantry and the 16th Virginia Cavalry. He died on 10/15/1913 and is buried in Russell County. He is mentioned in Lebanon News as receiving the "Southern Cross of Honor" from Daughters of the Confederacy in 1907.
