Mrs. James R. Greever
Post Office Box 987
Logan, West Virginia

Dear Mrs. Greever:

This is in reply to your letter of 4 April 1863, herewith returned.

The records show that one John Steele, surname also shown as Steel, private, Captain John A. McFarlane's Company Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted 7 April 1862, at Lebanon. The company muster roll for 30 November 1862 to 30 April 1863 shows him absent "On detached service."

This company subsequently became Company E, 6th Battalion Confederate Cavalry, Confederate States Army. His name appears as a signature to a Petition addressed to the Secretary of War by members of "McFarlane's Squadron Virginia Cavalry" (Companies E and F, 6th Battalion Confederate Cavalry), requesting transfer to a Virginia organization. This petition is dated Camp on Beaver Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky, 7 April 1864. No later record of him has been found.

This collection of records is by no means complete, and failure to find the entire record of Confederate military service does not indicate necessarily that an individual did not serve at some period not coverd by the records.

Sincerely yours,

WM. E. BERGIN
Major General, USA
The Adjutant General
