Letters of Samuel P. McFarlane

Samuel P. McFarlane enlisted in the 48th Virginia Infantry on 7/2/61 and was elected Color Sergeant. He was apparently killed at the battle of Gettysburg.
McFarlane was the son of Joseph and Sally McFarlane and was 24 when he enlisted. His younger brother James also served in the 48th Infantry.

Letter 1 - written December 30, 1861 from Winchester, Virginia.

Letter 2 - written June 4, 1863 near Hamilton's Crossing. McFarlane predicts "another bloody battle".
