Samuel P. McFarlane enlisted in the 48th Virginia Infantry on 7/2/61 and was elected Color Sergeant. He was apparently killed at the battle of Gettysburg. Letter 1 - written December 30, 1861 from Winchester, Virginia. Letter 2 - written June 4, 1863 near Hamilton's Crossing. McFarlane predicts "another bloody battle".
